DepositMark

Questions and answers

What people ask before they start.

The basics

What is DepositMark?

DepositMark is software for taking payment from a customer's checking account. Your customer authorizes the payment online, we confirm the bank account, and we prepare a check payable to your business. You deposit it at your own bank, or we print and deliver it for you. DepositMark is not a bank or a payment processor and never holds your money.

What is a demand draft?

A demand draft, also called a remotely created check, is a check your customer authorizes without signing it by hand. In place of a signature it carries a statement that the account holder authorized it. Banks handle it like any other check. It is a long-established payment method under the same check rules banks already follow.

How is this different from card payments or ACH?

With cards and most ACH services, a processor collects your sales, holds them, and pays you out later, often keeping a reserve. Here the check is drawn on your customer's bank and deposited at yours. Nothing passes through us, so there is no payout schedule and nothing held back from your sales.

Is this legal?

Yes. Remotely created checks are recognized in federal banking rules and state check law. There is one firm limit: federal rules prohibit using them for sales made by telephone, so we do not accept payments from telemarketing or phone orders. You remain responsible for selling lawfully and for getting a real authorization for every payment.

For businesses

Who can apply?

Businesses in the United States with a US business bank account. Every applicant is reviewed by our underwriting team. We verify that the company exists and is in good standing with its state, that the EIN matches, and that the owner is who they say they are.

What do I need to apply?

Your formation document (articles of organization or incorporation), your IRS EIN letter, and a photo ID for the owner signing the application. A certificate of good standing and a voided check help but are optional. The application takes about ten minutes.

How long does approval take?

We normally reply within two business days. If we need anything else we will ask.

How do I get my money, and how fast?

You deposit the check at your own bank, so the money goes straight into your account. How soon it is available depends on your bank's policy for check deposits, usually a few business days. We have no say over that timing and never hold the funds.

What does verification check?

Your customer types their account details, then logs in to their own bank. We compare the two: that the account number matches, that the name on the account is the person paying you, and that the available balance covers the payment at that moment. A payment is approved automatically only when all three agree. Otherwise it waits for review.

Can a check still be returned?

Yes. Verification lowers the risk; it does not remove it. A customer can spend the balance before the check clears, stop payment, or tell their bank they did not authorize it. A returned check is between you, your bank and your customer, as with any check. We keep the full authorization record so you can show exactly what your customer agreed to.

What happens if my customer disputes a payment?

Every authorization is stored exactly as your customer read it, with the date, time and internet address it came from, and the result of the bank login. You can retrieve that record at any time to give to your bank.

Can I use this for phone orders?

No. Federal rules prohibit remotely created checks for telephone sales, and the system refuses them. Online, in-person and mail orders are fine.

Which shopping carts do you work with?

There is a plugin for WooCommerce on WordPress, and an API with signed webhooks for anything else. For high-volume merchants we build custom integrations. See integrations.

Printing and depositing

What do I need to print checks?

A laser printer and blank check stock, which office suppliers sell as "check on top" letter-size paper. Each check comes to you as a one-page PDF laid out for that paper.

Do I need a special printer for the MICR line?

Usually not. The MICR line is the row of numbers along the bottom of a check, and most laser printers print it sharply. Banks now process nearly all checks from scanned images, so a check printed on an ordinary laser printer is accepted in most cases, including by mobile and scanner deposit. Magnetic (MICR) toner remains the traditional standard, and a few banks still expect it. Ask your bank what it requires and make one test deposit before you rely on it. Inkjet printers are not recommended.

Can I deposit with my phone or a check scanner?

Print the check first, then deposit the paper check the way your bank allows, including mobile or scanner deposit if your account has it. Do not deposit the PDF image itself: banks treat an image that was never a paper check differently, and most deposit agreements do not allow it.

Can you print and deposit the checks for me?

Yes, on our print and deposit service. We print each check, endorse it "for deposit only" to your account, and deliver it to your bank by hand or by mail. Every check is still payable to you and goes into your own account. It is available for accounts at banks we can deliver to, so ask us about yours.

What if I lose a printed check or it jams?

Reprint it. Reprints of the same check are free and carry the same check number, so destroy the spoiled copy and deposit only one.

Fees

What does it cost?

$19.95 a month, plus 1.25% and $0.10 for each check we deliver as a PDF, or 4% and $0.50 for each check we print and deposit for you. There is a one-time $99.99 security deposit and no setup fee. Every business pays the same price. See pricing.

When am I charged?

A check's fee is earned when the check is first printed and is collected 7 days later, together with anything else that has come due.

Do I pay for a check I never deposit, or one that is returned?

Yes. The fee is for preparing the check, so it is owed whether or not the check is deposited, paid or returned, and fees are not refundable. Print and deposit your checks promptly.

How do you collect your fees?

When you are approved you authorize us to collect what you owe from your business bank account, by a check drawn on it or by ACH debit.

Is there a reserve?

Not on your sales: your customers' payments never pass through us, so there is nothing to hold back. The $99.99 security deposit covers unpaid fees and is returned under the merchant agreement when your account is closed in good standing.

If you are paying a business

A business sent me a DepositMark link. What is it?

It is a secure page where you authorize one payment to that business from your checking account. It shows who you are paying and the amount before you agree to anything.

Why am I asked to log in to my bank?

To confirm the account is yours. The login happens in a window run by Plaid, a service many banks and finance apps use. We learn whether the account number matches, the name on the account, and whether the balance covers the payment. We never see or store your bank username or password, and we do not look at your transactions.

What if I cannot or do not want to log in?

You can continue without it. The business will then verify the account another way before the payment goes ahead, which may take longer.

What exactly am I authorizing?

One check, for the amount shown, payable to the business named on the page. The authorization does not cover any other payment. The full wording is shown before you accept it.

When does the money leave my account?

When the business deposits the check and your bank pays it, normally within a few business days of your authorization.

Can I cancel?

Contact the business named on the page before the check is deposited. You can also write to us at [email protected]. After a check has been paid, questions about refunds go to the business.

Is my information safe?

Your account number is encrypted when stored and deleted from our systems once the payment has cleared, been returned or been cancelled. After that we keep only the last four digits with the authorization record. See our privacy policy.
